Landscape photography isn’t about pressing a button—it begins by learning how to read natural light long before setting up the tripod. In mid-October, the Dolomites reveal their most dramatic atmosphere: crisp high-altitude air, limestone walls glowing at sunset, and larch forests reaching their peak shades of gold and amber.
This workshop is not a casual group stroll or a roadside shooting session. It is an intensive, practical field masterclass designed to explore the ridges and vantage points around Passo Giau away from the crowded spots, approaching every shot with methodical precision and preparing the files for fine art digital processing.

Why this workshop is different
Shooting from a parking lot will never teach you how to build a powerful composition. We will hike along grassy ridges and gentle slopes overlooking the Mondeval basin—an environment offering natural framing, erratic boulders, and clean perspectives, with minimal elevation gain and zero logistical risk.
The focus is entirely technical and methodological:

Multiple exposures & bracketing: Managing high dynamic range scenes between bright twilight skies and shadowed valleys without relying on GND filters, preserving full sensor latitude for clean blending.

Maximum sharpness through focus stacking: Calculating and shooting focus sequences on location to ensure pin-sharp clarity from foreground rocks all the way to distant mountain peaks.

Purposeful use of ND filters: Mastering long exposures to control cloud movement dynamics and smooth water textures.

Editing-oriented capture: Exposing for RAW latitude, managing the histogram and focal points specifically for advanced digital darkroom techniques.

Composition & focal lengths: From the geometric rigor of wide-angle framing to selective telephoto compression, isolating ridges, cliff textures, and fleeting light pockets across Cinque Torri and Tofana di Rozes.
Daily Schedule

2:30 PM – Meeting & Technical Briefing
Meeting at the Passo Giau parking area. Gear check, recommended shooting settings, and initial visual analysis of the landscape and light.

3:15 PM – On-Field Composition & Geometry
An easy, short hike toward scenic ridges. Foreground study with wide-angle lenses, leading lines, and hands-on focus stacking practice on textures and terrain.

5:30 PM – Golden Hour & Enrosadira
Positioning along the best focal lines as the dolomitic rock ignites in warm sunset tones. Assisted manual bracketing to capture the full tonal range.

6:20 PM – Blue Hour & Long Exposures
Shooting in cool twilight tones. Using solid ND filters on stable tripods, controlling sensor noise, and closing out the field session.

7:15 PM – Return to Vehicles & Wrap-up
Short 15-minute walk back to the cars using headlamps, followed by final remarks and Q&A.

Phase 2 (Online – Date agreed with the group)
A 2-hour collective Masterclass via Zoom. We will work directly on the RAW files captured during the workshop, covering exposure blending, digital focus stacking, color calibration, and fine art tonal balance. The complete recording will remain available to you for lifetime access.
Equipment & Requirements
Photographic Gear:

Camera: Mirrorless or DSLR with full manual controls.

Recommended Lenses:

Ultra-wide (e.g., 14–24mm or 16–35mm) for expansive scenes and close foreground elements.

Standard zoom (e.g., 24–70mm or 24–105mm) for balanced perspectives.

Telephoto lens (e.g., 70–200mm) to isolate mountain faces, ridges, and fall foliage details. (Technical note: f/4 lenses are perfectly fine since we will be working on tripods; fast f/2.8 glass is not required).

Sturdy Tripod: Essential for bracketing, focus stacking, and long exposures.

Spare Batteries & Formatted Memory Cards: At 2,200 meters, autumn temperatures drain batteries noticeably faster.

Filters (Optional but recommended): Screw-in or square ND filters and circular polarizer (CPL). (Note: Graduated ND filters are not required; dynamic range will be handled via bracketing).
