Have an SLR or mirrorless camera and a desire to learn!
It is also possible to do ONE to ONE or small group (2/3 people) portrait or landscape courses.

Exposure meter:
How it works, Evaluative, Center weighted, Partial, Spot
Exposure Lock (AEL)
Basic on-camera flash functions:
Auto, Fill flash, red-eye reduction, slow synchro
The White Balance:
The color temperature
The Focus: autofocus modes (AF singoal, Continuous, burst)
The Lenses, who are these unknowns?
Focal length, crop factor (crop), Maximum aperture, Macro lenses
Zooms vs Fixed
What lenses to buy?
Problem solving: the Backlight, night photo, sporting event
Clarification: Raw or Jpeg? What is the pixel? What about the print resolution? Cropping?
Understanding Light is essential!
The basic characteristics of light (Color, Direction, Intensity, Magnitude).
Composition (but wasn't that stuff for musicians?).
Life after the Click: downloading, backing up, posting, sharing
